A Pattern of Marital Infidelity

Pete Hegseth’s personal life reveals a troubling pattern of infidelity across multiple marriages. His first marriage to high school sweetheart Meredith Schwarz ended in 2008 when she filed for divorce citing his “irretrievable breakdown of the parties’ marriage relationship due to Respondent’s infidelity.” While still married to Schwarz, Hegseth was already involved with Samantha Deering, whom he met at Vets for Freedom where they both worked.

After marrying Deering in 2010, history repeated itself. While still married to her, Hegseth fathered a child with Fox News producer Jennifer Rauchet in August 2017. Deering filed for divorce the following month. Hegseth later married Rauchet in 2019 at Trump’s golf course in New Jersey.

Alcohol-Related Misconduct

Multiple sources have documented Hegseth’s concerning pattern of alcohol abuse:

“I’ve witnessed him intoxicated on numerous occasions. I’ve seen him carried away multiple times. Having him at the Pentagon would be terrifying.”

A particularly egregious incident occurred during a National Guard drill weekend when Hegseth, while in uniform, became so intoxicated at a Minneapolis strip club that his brother had to carry him out – a clear violation of military law.

Allegations of Threatening Behavior

His second wife Samantha reportedly feared for her safety and had established an escape plan that included a safe word to signal for help. According to sworn testimony, there was at least one incident where she hid in a closet out of fear.

His own mother, Penelope Hegseth, wrote in a 2018 email:

“You are an abuser of women – that is the ugly truth and I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around, and uses women for his own power and ego.”

Sexual Assault Allegations

In 2017, Hegseth faced serious allegations of sexual assault at a California hotel. While he maintains the encounter was consensual, the woman sought a rape examination at a hospital days later. Hegseth later paid her $50,000 as part of a confidentiality agreement.

Military Code Violations

Several of Hegseth’s acknowledged actions would have violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice had he still been serving, including:

Wearing his uniform while intoxicated at a strip club
Multiple instances of adultery while serving in the military
Ignoring direct combat commander orders regarding rules of engagement

Leadership Concerns

A whistleblower report from his time leading veterans’ organizations noted:

“Among the staff, there was considerable disdain for Pete. Most veterans do not believe he represents them or their standards of excellence.”

Despite these serious concerns about his character and judgment, Hegseth was confirmed as Secretary of Defense in January 2025 by a razor-thin 51-50 margin, with Vice President Vance casting the deciding vote.
